JAN SAUDEK
[b. 1935] Czech photographer
I believe all artists, if they are not lying to themselves, must believe that the best part of their work, or even their life, is in front of them. To look only to the past and to say 'those were the best years, when I was young' is to say that in the future there is nothing. - Jan Saudek

I have no way of portraying the lives of others. I portray my own. - Jan Saudek, Jan Saudek by Jan Saudek (Photographer), Christiane Fricke, Michael Konze , ISBN: 3822874299

...you won't learn anything from reading a handbook, a guide, on, how to perform a grand circle, on, the, horizontal bar — you have to practise for weeks, until your calluses bleed, slip a couple of times and fly into the corner of the gym, under the vaulting box, and then perhaps one day you will whirl through the air around the steel bar, and in the same way you need to focus, with difficulty, your impractical camera, knock over your tripod, despair over the negatives that are out of focus thanks to your inattention and then maybe, just once or a few times in your life, you will have a passable picture, and your friends will ungraciously comment that 'someone's already done that', and say 'what's it supposed to mean?', 'I don't understand it'. I'll tell you: I don't know what it's supposed to mean. The artist doesn't understand it either. He's an idiot, creating out of kind of need... - Jan Saudek
